‘If you’re young and talented, it’s like you have wings.’
At Normanton Junior Academy we are passionate about helping children to fly! There is a vast amount of talent at our school: talent for numbers, language, music, sport, movement and so much more. We believe that it is, not our job, but our responsibility as teachers to recognise, give opportunity to and foster the natural talents that lie within the children in our care. Please read on to find out more about how we do this at NJA
High performers across the curriculum
Talent is across the whole curriculum. As a school we feel that it is imperative to support higher attaining pupils in Core subjects (Maths, Reading and Writing), but that gifted children in foundation subjects should also be recognised and supported to develop further. We are also very aware that without experiences that expose you to new and exciting skills, you might never know of talents that might be hiding within! We endeavour to fill our curriculum with opportunities for children to succeed.
The core subjects
At NJA, we are committed to ensuring that children are challenged appropriately in core subjects. In Maths, after skills are mastered we look to challenging children using ‘greater depth’ tasks. These tasks take a great deal of thinking and reasoning skills. In order to be successful, children need to apply their learned mathematics in new ways, often using multiple skills. In English, the greater depth thinking continues. During reading lessons, we encourage children to find evidence within texts to support thinking and ideas. We support children to write their thinking clearly and coherently. When writing, high performing children are scaffolded to use a variety of skills and language to build exciting writing. Imagination and a love of literature are an essential part of any classroom at NJA.
The leaders view:
‘At NJA, our 'Gold Tasks' enable high performers to shine like the stars they are by showing off the great depths in their understanding in problem solving and reasoning tasks. Our challenging curriculum fosters future Fibonaccis, pushes potential Pascals and enables every Einstein to achieve the very best at school and beyond! Our maths magicians give me, as the maths leader, a run for my money with their truly mental maths skill!’
