Math

Normanton Junior Academy strives to deliver a stimulating and enjoyable Maths curriculum whilst ensuring that through appropriate support and challenge, learning is tailored to each and every child. This approach reflects the aims of the National Curriculum (2014).

Maths in Key Stage 2 is a subject which involves confidence and competence in the areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics. Maths at Normanton Junior Academy values underpinning mathematical learning by providing a balance between conceptual understanding and procedural fluency in order to develop arithmetic proficiency.  We also promote the ability to solve problems in a variety of mathematical contexts. We, as a school, recognise that these are fundamental necessities for children to be able to fulfil their potential in their academic lives and in society as a whole, allowing them to meet challenges equipped as numerate individuals. In primary education, we supply the foundations for everything that will follow

Aims

As a school, we place great emphasis on the children learning as much as possible through their own first-hand experience, in order to properly understand and acquire their knowledge and skills. We strongly value offering the children opportunities to use models and images to support their thinking.

Each child should be able to think and solve problems mathematically by using appropriate skills, manipulatives, concepts and knowledge. Children should be provided with rich and enjoyable experiences related to both individual needs and the wider requirements of society

We aim for the children to:

  • Have a positive attitude to mathematics;
  • Have self confidence in their ability to deal with maths;
  • Be able to work systematically, cooperatively and with perseverance;
  • Be able to think logically and independently;
  • Experience a sense of achievement regardless of age or ability;
  • Understand the appropriate underlying skills, concepts and knowledge of number, measurement, geometry and statistics;
  • Effectively use manipulatives to support thinking, learning and understanding, where needed;
  • Be able to apply previously acquired concepts, skills, knowledge and understanding to new situations both in and out of school;
  • Understand and appreciate pattern and relationship in mathematics;
  • Be able to communicate ideas, experiences and questions, clearly and fluently, using the appropriate mathematical vocabulary;
  • Be able to explore problems using the appropriate strategies, predictions and deductions both in and out of the classroom;
  • Encourage the use of mental calculations and efficient strategies to work out solutions to enable them to develop procedural fluency alongside their conceptual understanding.

For Parents to:

  • Be actively involved in their children’s mathematical learning both in school and at home

Maths has never had such prominence in a digital age, where numerical literacy is a pathway to opportunity; it is a premium skill taking prominence in our lives at work, at home and beyond. To make best choices in many aspects of life we need to be numerate, as low numeracy skills in adults are associated with barriers to success: unemployment, health problems and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. To behold mathematical literacy is to behold understanding of the world around us. Such utilitarian aims rely upon the sharing of concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are useful, essential even, to understanding everyday life. Maths also underpins fundamental learning in other subjects, with its essential application to other areas and contexts providing practical challenges supporting numerical understanding. It is essential for our intellectual development by teaching us skills in problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, creative thinking and communication. All such skills that are required to function within society.

To develop strong mathematical skills within young people is to develop key thinking strategies for solving problems, to promote logical reasoning and suggest solutions. To think mathematically is to try new approaches and to seek truth through the universal laws that the subject provides. The 5 pillars of maths at Normanton Junior Academy are how we attempt to instill numerical skills in the children we have the good fortune to teach, aiming to give every child possible the skills they need to prepare them for the next stage of their education and beyond

Love of maths

It is only if children love maths that they will reach their true potential, supporting creative thinking, deeper understanding of the way things truly are and the resilience to problem solve and seek solutions.

High quality teaching

In order for pupils to reach their full potential, teaching must focus on the skills required to take each pupil to the next level, using strong subject knowledge to bring the different concepts of maths together for maximum impact.

Arithmetic mileage

Frequent arithmetic practice, that develops procedural proficiency and conceptual understanding, creates the fluency a child needs to access and comprehend age-related problems

Reasoning acquisition

Exposing all children to a rich variety of problems is vital in allowing them to fully comprehend how mathematics underpins the world around them. Doing so through the teaching of maths is particularly important for those children who do not experience such understanding at home. It is imperative that children develop the reasoning  to apply maths to real life contexts.

Assessment

Accurate assessment is fundamental to delivering focused teaching by informing planning, and enabling the effectiveness of provision to be measured.
