Broad curriculum

The broad curriculum offered at Normanton Junior Academy exposes children to mathematical concepts across a wide range of subjects and contexts. A distinct arithmetic session and 4 maths lessons occur through the week. Mathematics is also embedded through Science and Topic, where suitable mathematical skills are taught and revisited.

Question stems

Problem solving and reasoning question stems have been shared by the Maths Leader as part of the planning non-negotiables . These questions are explicitly planned and asked daily to deepen the children’s understanding of mathematical concepts.

Silver and Gold tasks

Silver and gold tasks are planned and adapted from ‘Mastery’ and ‘Mastery with Greater Depth’ documents from the ‘National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics’ and the ‘White Rose Hub’. This ensures the children are accessing problem solving and reasoning at the expected standard and beyond.

Staff Development Meetings

New teaching and learning strategies are introduced half-termly through staff development meetings, which focus upon new problem solving and reasoning initiatives.

Cross-curricular application

The inclusion of ‘Theme Days’ and ‘Theme Weeks’ in the school enables children to apply problems to a variety of concepts and everyday challenges. For example, Science Week provides opportunity for children to interpret data, Safety Week enabled children to apply problem solving and reasoning strategies to concepts involved in staying safe.

Problem solving and reasoning day

Termly, the entire school shall participate in a problem solving and reasoning day that requires children to embed strategies taught in lessons a variety of contexts within a single day
