Great British Mat Art Off Exhibition

Wow! Just look at the amazing artwork our children have produced as part of this year's 'Great British Mat Art Off' exhibition. We will be showcasing our work, which is based on notable British artists, across the MAT along with pieces from eight of the MAT schools taking part this year. Keep an eye out for dates of our showcase exhibition.

Science Week

Our first annual 'Science Week' was a resounding success. Children enjoyed a week of practical science activities, producing some truly outstanding work in a wide range of contexts. Feedback from pupils was extremely positive and speaks volumes about the engaging environment that was created by children and staff alike.

The week was rounded off with a fantastic 'Science Fair'; all who attended were impressed with the level of work and explanation provided by all participants. This showcase of work (all of which was produced outside of school) embodies the love of learning that makes Normanton Junior Academy such an inspirational place, and would not have been possible without fantastic home support. Everyone who entered should be incredibly proud of their efforts.

The following children were chosen as 'Year Group Science Champions':

  • Year 3: Oliver (3RT)         Colour flowers
  • Year 4: Ethan G (4SG)     How heat affects states of matter
  • Year 5: Bethan (5AP)      Which materials and shapes make the best parachutes?
  • Year 6: Daniel (6NY)        Which drink rots teeth the most?

Bethan from 5AP was crowned as the overall winner of the event. The judges were impressed with the investigation and explanation of all the 'Year Group Science Champions'. However, the technical vocabulary Bethan was able to use accurately to aid her explanation really set her apart. Well done, Bethan, on becoming our first ever Science Champion!

A final thank you to the staff and parents who made the week the success it was.

WW1 Theme Day

In Year 3, as part of our topic on WW1 we dedicated a day to living life as a soldier in WW1. We experienced everything, from being conscripted into the army with all the same tests, through to trench warefare and using our combat skills to defeat the enemy. We learnt the importance of first aid for injured soldiers and finally we baked trench cake, a treat for soldiers away in the trenches. A fabulous day of fun, learning and history.

Young Voices

On Tuesday 16th January our school choir braved the elements and took part in the Young Voices Concert at Sheffield Arena. The children sang a wide variety of songs: from current pop hits to cartoon themes; from rock classics to traditional African songs; from soft ballads to raucous soul! They were also lucky enough to be able to work as backing singers for Jazz and Soul star Natalie Williams, and acapella legends The Magnets. All the children performed brilliantly and had a great evening!

Eden Camp

As part of our World War Two topic learning, Year 5 visited Eden Camp for the day. At Eden Camp, we explored WW2 sheds which provided displays of information as well as realistic experiences of many aspects of the Second World War. We spent the day reading about and looking at the experiences of soldiers, citizens and people who had been held captive during these horrific times. Some of the sheds had been set up with scenery, sounds and smells of those times for us to walk through; our favourite sheds were the ones about The Blitz because they gave a very realistic experience. They were dark, loud and did not smell very nice, therefore this enabled us to empathise with what some people had to experience during those times. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and afterwards, we used what we had learned to write our own non-chronological reports about World War Two

Cross Country Competition

Friday 13th October saw pupils from Normanton Junior Academy compete in the Wakefield School Games cross country competition. Twenty nine pupils from year 4, 5 and 6 competed in races against children from schools across the Wakefield district. All pupils behaved exemplary and we were incredibly proud to have them represent our school. Well done to all those that took part - you gave it your all and didn’t give in when it got tough! A special well done to Taylor Hammill, who came 2nd in the year 5 boys race. Taylor will go on to represent Wakefield in the West Yorkshire Games in March. We wish him good luck!

Year 4 Kingswood Residential

On the 19th May, children in Year 4 embarked on an exciting adventure to the Kingswood Outdoor centre at Dearne Valley. From taking on a leap of faith and an abseil, to having a go at raftbuilding! It was a fantastic weekend, and the children loved every minute!

Junk Orchestra day

Thank you to all parents who donated items for our junk orchestra day. On Monday the 22nd May all children made a music instrument and learnt about a particular singer or composer. Each class then composed their own piece of music and performed them to the rest of the school on Thursday 25th May. Every child had worked hard to produce a high quality instrument and the performances were brilliant! Well done to all the children involved!

Joint Schools' Carol Service

On the 8th December 2016 the Normanton Junior Academy Choir performed at the Joint Schools' Carol Service at All Saints Parish Church. We all sung carols and each school performed their own song. We performed Silent Night in French. Each school sung brilliantly and it was a very festive event. We are already looking forward to next year's carol service!

Young Voices

On the 10th January the Normanton junior Academy Choir went to Sheffield Motorpoint Arena to take part in Young Voices 2017. We had a fantastic day, singing rock songs, pop songs and folk songs! We were lucky enough to sing with Natalie Williams and X Factor's Tabby Callaghan. We are already looking forward to next year!
