Paired reading
Pupils read multiple times a week with a partner, enjoying books together and supporting each others’ learning.
Modelling
Adults around school model their own love of reading and appreciation for particular authors.
Authors
Pupils meet authors who can inspire a love of reading.
Poetry competition
Every pupil in school is involved in the annual poetry competition with the final taking place in the hall in front of the whole school. This is a very inclusive event.
Class novel
Each class follows a class novel chosen due to its appeal to children in the year group, with extra consideration given to engaging boys.
Reading scheme
Almost all pupils have been placed back on the reading scheme, having previously moved off it after the lime book band. Resources are now utilised more effectively and new resources have been purchased to maximise interest levels.
Library
The library has been refurbished and is now a stimulating reading environment available to all pupils. All pupils have the opportunity to take books home to read for pleasure.
E-books
E-books are available through the Reading Eggs programme, suitable for this technologically–savvy generation.
Reading Stars
Rewards are in place for the classes that read most frequently at home.
Learning environment
The learning environment in school stimulates pupils’ interest in reading.
Book swap
Pupils now have the opportunity to swap books from home they have read to find exciting new reading material.
